Travelling from Gran Canaria Airport

Gran Canaria Airport sits on the east coast, about 25km south of Las Palmas, right beside the GC-1 motorway that runs north to the capital and south to the resorts. A single terminal handles arrivals, and the GC-1 makes most journeys straightforward in either direction.

Heading north, Las Palmas and its city beaches are about 20 minutes up the GC-1. Heading south, the main resort strip of San Agustín, Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas is around 25 to 30 minutes along the same motorway.

Further southwest, Puerto Rico and Amadores are about 40 minutes, with Puerto de Mogán at the island’s southern tip closer to an hour. The GC-1 can slow near Las Palmas at rush hour, but a fixed price means traffic never changes what you pay.

Gran Canaria splits neatly into the lively southern beaches and the busier capital in the north, with dunes, mountains and quiet coves in between, so it helps to know your resort before you arrive.

FAQs

What travellers ask before travelling to Gran Canaria.

How do I get from Gran Canaria Airport to my hotel?

Most of Gran Canaria's popular hotels and resorts, including Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas, Costa Meloneras and Puerto Rico, are in the south of the island. Reaching them from Gran Canaria Airport typically takes 20 to 50 minutes, depending on your exact destination and traffic. You can take an airport taxi or use public buses, though public transport may involve waiting, fixed timetables, or extra stops along the route.

Is Gran Canaria Airport close to Las Palmas?

Yes. Las Palmas is around 25 km from the airport and can be reached in 20 to 25 minutes. However, most holiday destinations are located further south.

How much is a private transfer from Gran Canaria Airport?

The price depends on your destination and the type of vehicle. Shorter trips, such as to Las Palmas, cost less, while transfers to the south of the island like Puerto Rico are higher. Your final price also depends on whether you are bringing a bicycle, golf clubs or extra luggage. You will always see the full price before booking, so you know exactly what to expect.

How do I get from Gran Canaria Airport to Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés?

Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés are in the south of Gran Canaria, around 30 to 35 km from the airport. The journey usually takes 25 to 30 minutes by car. A direct transfer is the simplest option, as public transport may involve waiting times and multiple stops depending on your exact destination.

How far is Puerto Rico or Amadores from the airport?

Puerto Rico and Amadores resort areas are around 45 to 50 km from the airport and typically take 35 to 45 minutes by car, depending on traffic.

Why do most travellers stay in the south of Gran Canaria?

The south of the island, including Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés and Puerto Rico, has the main resort areas, beach-focused accommodations, and more consistent weather throughout the year. This is why most airport transfers are towards that part of the island rather than Las Palmas, which is primarily a local city, rather than a main holiday base.

Is it easy to get public transport from the airport to resorts?

There are bus connections, but routes to resort areas are not always direct and may require waiting or changes. Line 66 to the southern resorts of Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas runs about once an hour. Fixed bus timetables may also not match your flight arrival, which can be less convenient if you are travelling with luggage or arriving for the first time.

Are taxis available at Gran Canaria Airport?

Yes, taxi transfers are available outside the arrivals area. However, when several flights land at the same time, demand can increase quickly and waiting times may be longer. Many fares run south to the resorts like Maspalomas or Puerto Rico, so a metered taxi can be more expensive and less predictable than a fixed transfer price.
