Travelling from Tenerife South Airport

Tenerife South Airport, also known as Reina Sofía, sits on the south coast in Granadilla de Abona, just off the TF-1 motorway that runs the length of the island’s south and east coasts. A single terminal handles arrivals, and almost every resort transfer runs along the TF-1.

The closest resorts are the big southern trio, Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and Costa Adeje, all around 15 to 20 minutes west along the TF-1. El Médano, Golf del Sur and Costa del Silencio are even closer, within about 10 to 15 minutes of the airport.

Further west, Callao Salvaje, Playa Paraíso and Los Gigantes are a longer run of around 30 to 40 minutes along the coast. The north of the island, including Puerto de la Cruz and the capital Santa Cruz, is a longer drive of 60 to 90 minutes over the TF-1.

Tenerife’s south coast is built for sunshine and beaches, while the greener north and Mount Teide are a proper day out, so a transfer with room for the whole group makes the longer drives easier. And with a fixed price, distance never changes what you pay.

FAQs

What travellers ask before travelling to Tenerife.

Private transfer or taxi from Tenerife South Airport: which should I choose?

Both are available when you land. The difference is mostly about timing and certainty. With a taxi, you join the queue and pay at the end of the trip. With a pre-booked transfer, everything is arranged in advance, so your driver is already waiting and you know the price before you travel.

How do I get from Tenerife South Airport to my hotel?

To get to your hotel from Tenerife South Airport, you can take a taxi, use public buses, or book a private transfer in advance. The bus line 40 runs every 30 minutes to Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, but they stop at the bus station rather than your hotel door, so you may need a taxi for the last stretch. Taxis go directly, but you may need to wait, and the price is set at the end. With a pre-booked transfer, your driver is pre-arranged and ready for your arrival.

Are pre-booked transfers necessary if my hotel is close to the airport?

Even for short journeys, a pre-booked transfer can be worth it. If your hotel is close to the airport, local transport can still vary depending on arrival times, and waits may be longer when several flights arrive at once. With a pre-booked transfer, your transport is arranged before you travel, the price is fixed and confirmed at booking, and your driver has the details in advance to plan the journey to your accommodation.

How far are the main resorts from the airport?

Most of Tenerife's popular resorts are within easy reach of Tenerife South Airport. Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas are typically 15 to 20 minutes away, and nearby resorts like Callao Salvaje take under 30 minutes. Los Gigantes is around 35 minutes, Santa Cruz de Tenerife around 45, while Puerto de la Cruz on the north of the island takes 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic and time of day.

Can I get to the north of Tenerife from this airport?

Yes. Tenerife South Airport is the main gateway for visitors travelling to both the south and north of the island. Northern destinations such as Puerto de la Cruz or Santa Cruz de Tenerife can all be reached by airport transfer, though journey times are longer due to the distance. Transfers to Puerto de la Cruz typically take around 60 to 90 minutes, depending on traffic and your exact destination.

How much do private transfers from Tenerife South Airport usually cost?

There is no single price, as it depends on where you are going and the type of vehicle you choose. Nearby south-coast resorts like Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos cost less, while the longer run north to Puerto de la Cruz is higher. Your final price also depends on whether you are bringing a bicycle, extra luggage, or booking a minivan for additional space and passengers. The total price is shown before booking, so you can decide knowing the exact cost.

How easy is it to get a taxi from Tenerife South Airport?

Taxis are available at the airport, but wait times can vary depending on how many flights arrive at the same time. During busy periods, you may need to queue, and it can take longer if you are travelling in a group or need a larger vehicle. Because the island is spread out, a metered fare to a resort further off, like Puerto de la Cruz in the north, is also harder to predict than a fixed transfer price.
