Planning your transfer?
A private transfer from Faro Airport (FAO) takes you door to door across the Algarve, from Faro city in around 15 minutes and Vilamoura in about 25, to Lagos in the far west, roughly an hour and a quarter along the A22.
Suntransfers gives you a private vehicle for your whole group, from standard cars to minibuses and coaches for larger parties, with a driver waiting. Book online in advance, we track your flight and adjust your transfer if it is delayed, and cancel for free up to 48 hours before pick-up.
Travelling from Faro Airport
Faro Airport is the main arrival point for the whole Algarve coast, feeding the central resorts of Albufeira, Vilamoura and Quarteira, the western coast around Portimão and Lagos, and further east around Tavira.
Most journeys run on the A22 (Via do Infante), the motorway that crosses the Algarve from east to west, or the slower coastal N125. With a private airport transfer, the price is agreed before you travel, so unlike a metered taxi, traffic or a longer route won’t change what you pay.
Faro’s own old town, around the Sé cathedral and the marina, sits about 15 minutes away. The resorts spread along the coast in both directions: Vilamoura, Tavira, and Quarteira at around 30 minutes, Albufeira and Monte Gordo about 45 minutes, and Carvoeiro and Portimão closer to 50 minutes.
Heading further? Lagos and Praia da Rocha in the west are around an hour. Faro is also a common gateway into the Spanish border towns of the Huelva coast, such as Ayamonte and Isla Canela.

FAQs
What travellers ask before heading to Faro Airport.
How far is Faro Airport from the city centre?
Faro Airport is around 7 km from the city centre. By road the journey usually takes about 15 minutes in normal traffic. Faro's old town, cathedral and marina are compact and walkable once you arrive, and the airport is one of the closest to its city of any Algarve gateway.
Can I get a transfer to resorts in Albufeira, Vilamoura or Lagos?
Yes. These are among the most popular Algarve resorts reached from Faro Airport. Vilamoura and Albufeira are close by, around 25 to 40 minutes, while Lagos and Praia da Rocha sit further west, closer to an hour. Private transfers run directly to each, taking you straight to your hotel or villa.
How early should I arrive at Faro Airport?
For departures from Faro Airport, aim to be there 2 hours before a short-haul flight and 3 for long-haul, with a buffer in summer when check-in and security get busy. If we’re driving you to the airport, we factor that into your pickup time so you have a comfortable buffer before your flight.
How much is a taxi from Faro Airport to Albufeira?
A metered taxi from Faro Airport to Albufeira generally costs around €40 to €50 depending on your exact drop-off, time of day, traffic, and luggage. Albufeira is about 46 km away, a drive of roughly 40 minutes on the A22. By contrast, a private transfer has one fixed price, with your pickup rescheduled in case of delays.
How far is Vilamoura from Faro Airport?
Vilamoura is around 25 km from Faro Airport, one of the closest major resorts. By road it is a 25 to 30 minute drive, though the exact time depends on whether you are heading to the marina, the golf resorts, or the beach at Falésia. It sits inside the Algarve's "golden triangle" alongside Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo.
Are taxis readily available at Faro Airport?
Faro Airport has a taxi rank directly outside the arrivals hall. Waiting times and queues can be unpredictable, especially during the busy 9am to 4pm arrivals window in summer. Larger groups often wait longer for taxis with enough seats and luggage space, and child seats or room for golf clubs are not guaranteed.
Does Faro Airport have a train station?
No, Faro Airport does not have its own train station. The nearest rail station is in Faro city, about 15 minutes away, reached by local bus or taxi. Regional Algarve trains run along the coast but are infrequent, and the western beaches and eastern towns often need a connection, so many travellers prefer a direct private transfer or shared shuttle.
