Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport, more commonly known as Madrid airport (MAD), is named after the late former Spanish Prime Minister, Adolfo Suárez. It was renamed in 2014 to show recognition of Suárez’s contributions to the restoration of democracy after the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. Then there’s the ‘Barajas’ in the airport title, which refers to the adjacent district of Barajas, notable for its key links between Europe and Latin America.

The airport itself is within the city limits of Madrid and is on track to see about 6,000,000 passengers to their chosen destinations by the end of 2019.
