Travelling from Heraklion Airport

Heraklion Airport «Nikos Kazantzakis» is about 5 km east of Heraklion city on the north coast. It is the main gateway to Crete, best placed for the central and eastern half of the island.

Most journeys run on the north coast highway, the E75. Heading east, the resorts follow the coast: Gouves and Hersonissos at around 25 to 30 minutes, Malia at about 30 to 35, and Agios Nikolaos and Elounda in the Gulf of Mirabello at roughly an hour.

Heraklion city, with its Venetian harbour, the Koules fortress and the Archaeological Museum, is only 10 minutes away, and the Minoan palace of Knossos is just south of the city. A fixed-price transfer covers the journey whatever the traffic.

Staying in western Crete, around Rethymno or Chania, is possible from Heraklion but involves a longer drive, roughly an hour to Rethymno and around two hours to Chania. For those areas, Chania Airport is often the closer option.

FAQs

What travellers ask before heading to Heraklion Airport.

How far is Heraklion Airport from the city centre?

Heraklion Airport is around 5 km east of the city centre. By road the journey usually takes about 10 minutes in normal traffic. The Venetian harbour, the Archaeological Museum and Knossos are all close once you arrive.

How much is a taxi from Heraklion Airport to Agios Nikolaos?

A taxi from Heraklion Airport to Agios Nikolaos generally costs around €70 to €90, depending on your exact drop-off, time of day, traffic, and luggage. Agios Nikolaos is about 60 km east in the Gulf of Mirabello, a journey of roughly 50 minutes. By contrast, a private transfer has one fixed price, with your pickup rescheduled in case of delays.

How far is Hersonissos from Heraklion Airport?

Hersonissos is around 25 km from Heraklion Airport, one of the closest major resorts. By road it is a 25 to 30 minute drive east on the E75, though the exact time depends on whether you are heading to the seafront, the harbour or the hillside villages of Koutouloufari and Piskopiano above the town.

Are taxis readily available at Heraklion Airport?

Heraklion Airport has a taxi rank directly outside arrivals. As one of the busiest airports in Greece in summer, it sees many flights land close together, so queues can build and waiting times are unpredictable. Larger groups often wait longer for taxis with enough seats, and child seats are not guaranteed.

Can I get a transfer to resorts in Hersonissos, Malia or Agios Nikolaos?

Yes. These are among the most popular Crete resorts reached from Heraklion Airport. Hersonissos and Malia are close by, around 25 to 35 minutes east on the coast, while Agios Nikolaos and Elounda sit further round the bay at roughly an hour. Private transfers run directly to each, taking you straight to your hotel or apartment.

How early should I arrive at Heraklion Airport?

For departures, aim for 2 hours before a short-haul flight and 3 for long-haul, and add a buffer in summer when the terminal is busy and check-in and security get crowded. If we are driving you to the airport, we factor that into your pickup time so you have a comfortable buffer before your flight.
